Day 1: Gondar Royal Castles, Churches and Cultural Sites

Begin your Gondar city tour with a visit to Fasil Ghebbi, the Royal Enclosure and one of Ethiopia’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walk through the fortified palace compound built by Emperor Fasilides and his successors during the 17th century. Explore impressive stone castles, royal halls, banquet areas, stables, and historic courtyards that reflect the power, creativity, and architectural legacy of the Gondarine period.

Continue to Debre Berhan Selassie Church, one of the most famous churches in Ethiopia and a masterpiece of Ethiopian Orthodox art. The interior walls are covered with colorful murals depicting biblical scenes, saints, and religious stories, while the ceiling is known for its iconic painted angel faces. This church is one of the most photographed and admired religious sites in the country.

In the afternoon, visit Fasilides’ Bath, a peaceful stone pool complex surrounded by ancient walls and large trees. The site becomes the spiritual center of Gondar during Timket, the Ethiopian Epiphany festival, when it is filled with water and used for one of the country’s most spectacular religious celebrations.
