Day 1: Mekele to Hamedela via Berhale
Begin your journey with a scenic drive from Mekele to Hamedela, passing through the small town of Berhale, where camel caravans pause before heading to the northern highlands. Witness long camel caravans transporting salt to and from the salt mines. Marvel at the colorful landscapes, including the mesmerizing sulfur springs. After arriving in Hamedela, enjoy a sunset at Dallol. Drive Duration: 3–4 hours; Overnight camping.
Day 2: Dallol and Lake Asale Exploration
Start your day with a drive to Ragad (Asebo) to observe salt mining activities. Watch locals breaking salt into rectangular slabs and loading them onto camels. Continue to Dallol, one of the lowest places on Earth (116 meters below sea level), known for its colorful volcanic landscapes and salt formations. Day 3: Mekele to Dodom via Abaala
Begin your early morning drive to Dodom, passing through dramatic landscapes of solidified lava, sand, and occasional oases. Trek 17 km from Dodom to the base of the Erta Ale Volcano, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Witness the world’s longest-standing lava lake, glowing red against the night sky. Spend the night camping on the rim of the volcano. Drive Duration: 6 hours; Overnight in Erta Ale.
Day 4: Descend and Return to Mekele
Descend from Erta Ale early in the morning and relax at the base camp. Enjoy breakfast before continuing your journey through local villages like Erbiti, eventually returning to Mekele.
