Day 1: Axum – The Ancient Capital
Arrive in Axum and settle in before beginning a comprehensive tour of the ancient capital. Visit Axum Tsion St. Mary Orthodox Church, an important religious site known for its historical and spiritual significance. Continue to Dungur Palace, also known as the Queen of Sheba Palace, and explore the ruins traditionally associated with the legendary queen. See the Ezana Stone, an ancient inscription recording the decrees of Axumite King Ezana, then enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Ezana Park and Garden. Continue to Arabtu Ensessa Church, King Bazen’s Tomb, the Axum Obelisks and Stelae Field, and Queen of Sheba’s Bath. Overnight in Axum.
Day 2: Axum – Yeha Temple – Debre Tsion Abune Abraham – Yohannes Makudi
After breakfast, drive to Yeha Temple, one of Ethiopia’s oldest known monuments and a remarkable pre-Axumite site dating back around 3,000 years. The temple is known for its impressive stonework, ancient carvings, and historical significance. Continue to Debre Tsion Abune Abraham Monastery, an extraordinary church carved from living rock. Explore its architectural details and learn about its religious importance. Afterward, proceed to Yohannes Makudi Church, another ancient rock-hewn church reached through a narrow cleft in the sandstone walls. Overnight camping near Debre Tsion village.
Day 3: Gheralta – Korkor Mountains – Mariam Korkor – Daniel Korkor
Drive to Gheralta, a dramatic landscape of sandstone cliffs and mountain churches. Begin a moderate trek to Mariam Korkor Monastery, a historic rock-hewn church perched high in the Korkor Mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside while learning about the monastery’s history and religious importance. After visiting Mariam Korkor, continue to the nearby Abba Daniel’s Prayer Room, also known as Daniel Korkor, a small and peaceful rock church with a quiet spiritual atmosphere. Day 4: Abuna Yemata Guh – Mekelle
Drive to Megab, a small town south of Hawzen, and begin the ascent to Abuna Yemata Guh. This sacred cliffside church is one of the most dramatic and memorable religious sites in Tigray, known for its challenging approach, panoramic views, and ancient paintings. The climb is demanding but highly rewarding for travelers comfortable with heights and mountain terrain. After visiting Abuna Yemata Guh, drive to Mekelle, where you may explore the local market and enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal. If time allows, the journey can be extended toward the Danakil Depression from Mekelle.
