This 12-day tour explores Danakil Depression, Lalibela Churches, Erta Ale Volcano, Dallol, Lake Asale and Salt Mining. It is designed for travelers interested in historical, cultural, religious, adventure experiences, combining important attractions with well-paced sightseeing and local discovery. The itinerary includes volcano trekking, salt mining visit, camel caravan viewing and church visit. Wildlife sightings may include Soemmerring’s Gazelle, Beisa Oryx and Salt’s Dik-dik.
Day 1: Arrival and City Tour
You will be met upon arrival from your international flight and transfer to your hotel for refreshments. Begin your sightseeing of Addis Ababa with a visit to the Ethnological Museum, which houses anthropological, musicological, and cultural artifacts. It is the first university museum in Ethiopia, located within the main campus of Addis Ababa University and formerly the palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. Continue to the National Museum, home to Ethiopia’s most famous archaeological finds, including “Lucy,” the fossilized remains of Australopithecus afarensis. Recently, the museum added a display on “Selam,” a fossil estimated to be 3.3 million years old. Overnight at a hotel/lodge.
Day 2: Addis Ababa to Awash National Park
Drive to Awash National Park through the small town of Mila. Arrive in the park in the afternoon and enjoy the scenic landscape dominated by the jagged edges of Mount Fantelle, a dormant volcano towering over the surrounding bushland. Visit the impressive Awash Falls, spilling into a 150-meter gorge, and spot wildlife such as Beisa Oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelle, and Salt’s dik-dik. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 3: Awash National Park to Logia
Continue your journey through the Rift Valley into the Afar Triangle, gradually descending in elevation. The landscape transforms from savannah to steppe and semi-desert, interrupted by oases along the Awash River. On the way, there will be an opportunity to see the Kereyou tribes. Day 4: Drive into Lake Afdera – The Salt Lake
Leave the main road and continue north on an unpaved 4×4 route into the Danakil Depression. Travel through rugged, moonlike terrain of volcanic rifts, black lava flows, and gravel deserts, descending below sea level to reach Lake Afdera, which lies 100 meters below sea level. Upon arrival, visit the fascinating salt production sites where pure salt is extracted from the lake. Overnight in tents (Bed, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner).
Day 5: Afdera – Drive to Dodom Village (Base of Erta Ale)
In the morning, observe the salt workers at Lake Afdera and their traditional techniques for harvesting salt. Continue across the desert to Erta Ale Volcano, stopping in Kurswad, an Afar village, for lunch and to pick up local guides. The drive across old lava flows and sandy plains leads to the base of the volcano. Load supplies onto camels and begin the evening trek to the volcano rim, which takes about 4–5 hours. The hike follows gentle lava formations and is done partly in the dark. Camp near the crater and witness the spectacular sight of the active lava lake. Day 6: Erta Ale – Ahmed Ella
Descend from the volcano after breakfast and drive through the desert to Ahmed Ella, a small settlement where camel caravans gather before heading to Mekele. In the afternoon, watch endless lines of camels arriving empty and departing loaded with salt blocks. Overnight in tents (Bed, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner).
Day 7: Excursion to Dallol
Visit the salt workers and merchants near Lake Asela to observe the traditional process of cutting, shaping, and loading salt onto camels. Continue driving to Dallol to explore its remarkable landscape of colorful hot springs formed by minerals such as sulfur and potash. Dallol is recognized as the hottest inhabited place on Earth, with an average annual temperature of 34°C recorded between 1960 and 1966. Return to camp in the late afternoon. Overnight in tents (Bed, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner).
Day 8: Ahmed Ella to Mekele
In the morning, watch thousands of camels departing toward the salt fields. Drive to Mekele, stopping at a small waterfall for lunch and to wash off salt from vehicles. In the late afternoon, ascend to the highland plateau and reach Mekele. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 9: Drive to Lalibela
Drive south through stunning landscapes between the highlands and the edge of the Danakil Depression to reach the remarkable town of Lalibela, home to one of Ethiopia’s most famous archaeological and religious sites. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 10: Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Begin your visit to the first cluster of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches. Constructed some 800 years ago by King Lalibela, this “New Jerusalem” is an architectural wonder. Each church is carved from a single block of rock, both inside and out, showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship. Among the 11 rock-hewn churches, the most impressive is Bet Giorgis, carved in the shape of a Greek cross and remarkably well preserved. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 11: Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Visit the Church of Yimrhane Kristos, a masterpiece of Axumite wood-and-stone architecture known for its intricately decorated wooden ceilings with geometric and figurative motifs. Return to Lalibela and visit the remaining rock-hewn churches, including Bete Gabriel and Raphael, Merkorios, Emanuel, and Abba Libanos. Bete Emanuel stands out for its Axumite-style carvings, false windows, and symbolic multi-story designs reminiscent of the stelae of Axum. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 12: Fly Back to Addis Ababa and Departure
Fly back to Addis Ababa. The afternoon is free for last-minute shopping and city exploration. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with cultural performances representing various ethnic groups. After dinner, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
