Day 1: Fly to Lalibela and Visit the Northern Church Group
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, continue to the famous rock-hewn churches. Visit Bete Golgotha-Mika’el, Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel, Bete Denagel, and Bete Medhane Alem, the largest free-standing monolithic church in the world. These churches reveal remarkable carving techniques, symbolic architecture, biblical artwork, and centuries of living religious tradition. Later in the day, visit Bete Giyorgis, Lalibela’s most iconic church, carved in the shape of a cross and reached through a network of trenches and passages.
Day 2: Visit Na’akuto La’ab and Asheton Maryam
After breakfast, drive to Na’akuto La’ab Monastery, founded by the successor of King Lalibela. Inside the cave church, see sacred artifacts, ancient crosses, manuscripts, drums, and stone basins that collect holy water dripping from the cave roof. Continue to Asheton Maryam Church, a historic mountain sanctuary known for its spiritual atmosphere, ancient religious treasures, and beautiful views of the surrounding highlands. Return to Lalibela after the visit.
Day 3: Visit the Remaining Churches and Return to Addis Ababa
Spend the morning exploring the remaining southeastern cluster of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, including Bete Gabriel-Rufael, Bete Marqorios, Bete Emmanuel, and Bete Abba Libanos. These churches show distinctive Aksumite architectural influences and detailed decorative elements carved from volcanic rock. After completing the visit, transfer to Lalibela Airport for the flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of the tour.
